One massive concern when thinking about our pursuits in using videography as a learning tool in athletics is Privacy. It seems like a huge feat to understand how you can gain consent and maintain privacy when videotaping young students.

A huge part of this topic is remaining confidential. This means that if the video is being shared, intentionally or not, the student in the video must not be recognizable unless consent has been given prior to this.

Additionally, personal information is confidential, this means that you must be very cautious about what is said in the videos in terms of any personal information including names.

In order for students to be in a video, you must obtain written permission from both the parents and the school board. Since the students are minors, they are not able to consent for themselves, and rather their parents give consent on their behalf. This being said, I would always confirm with the students if they are comfortable being videotaped.

As the videographer, you are also to ensure that the video is stored in a location where there is no unauthorized access. This, of course, is the case if there is an understanding that the content will not be shared.
